How do I get help?
You can reach the CCI HelpDesk in one of three ways: via e-mail at support@cci.fsu.edu, submitting a ticket, or giving us a call at 644-8108.

The quickest way to contact us is to send an e-mail to support@cci.fsu.edu which will create a support ticket for you. Please refrain from e-mailing IT staff or HelpDesk technicians directly with requests for help. All requests for technical support should be routed through our ticketing system. This will allow all of our technicians to track the issue and communicate with you through our staff control panel, ensuring a faster response time and fully documented solution.

What can the HelpDesk do for me?
The CCI HelpDesk oversees IT support for students, faculty, and staff at the College of Communication & Information. We troubleshoot technical issues and offer advice for technical problems. We provide laptops, digital cameras, and video recorders for checkout to students, faculty, and staff. The CCI HelpDesk does not provide support for class assignments; we refer all assignment-related questions to the course's teaching assistant.

What free software is available to CCI students, staff, and faculty?
A variety applications from Microsoft, IBM, and more are available through CCI's software portal. Learn more by visiting the software page.

What software is installed on my CCI computer?
All faculty/staff workstations are FSU-owned equipment and are configured with a suite of default programs for productivity and IT support. Our standard build includes installations of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.), Adobe Acrobat DC, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome. Both Bomgar and Lansweeper agents are also installed to provide remote support and inventory management.

A local HelpDesk account is also configured on every computer with administrative rights for IT support.

What software is installed in the computer labs?
Computer lab workstations include the above software, as well as IBM SPSS, DeepFreeze, and Insight.

DeepFreeze allows computers to remain in a “frozen” state which means the computer is wiped clean when a user logs out. Be sure to inform students that all data saved to the computer is immediately deleted when their session ends. This helps keep our computers protected from being infected with malware and ensures a consistent user experience.

Insight is an educational tool that allows instructors to monitor student activity from the instructor computer at the front of the lab. Instructors can use Insight to see their students’ screens and limit access to certain applications or websites if necessary.

A local HelpDesk account is also configured on every computer with administrative rights for IT support.

How do I install other applications?
If you require additional software to be installed on your computer or in a computer lab, please submit a ticket to the CCI HelpDesk with a link to the application. We will conduct an assessment on the safety, security, and compatibility of the software and schedule a time to have it installed.

How do I install IBM SPSS or MATLAB on my computer?
IBM SPSS and MATLAB are licensed through FSU Information Technology Services so we receive special University pricing. This can only be applied to FSU-owned equipment. Each computer running SPSS must be licensed for a recurring cost of around $77 a year. MATLAB is available for $84 a year. Please submit a ticket to the CCI HelpDesk with written approval for this purchase from your departmental director and we will schedule a time to have it installed.

What data is reported by CCI's inventory management software (Lansweeper)?
A Lansweeper agent is installed onto every FSU-owned computer in order for the HelpDesk to conduct efficient and accurate IT asset management. This agent collects a basic hardware inventory (computer model, CPU, RAM, etc.) and a list of installed applications. It securely reports this information to CCI’s inventory server upon request from the CCI HelpDesk, provided the device is physically plugged into the FSU network in one of the College of Communication and Information buildings (WJB, UCC, LSB, DIF, WAR, etc.).

How does the HelpDesk use the information reported by Lansweeper?
The data allows the HelpDesk to gather information about our network and devices for IT support and security. The software allows us to assign equipment to individuals for IT asset management. The installed software inventory is used to document that we adhere to FSU’s commercial licensing agreements.

Please note: the software only performs scans when the computer is physically plugged into the FSU network, as described above.

Who can access the information reported by Lansweeper?
The information collected by Lansweeper is encrypted and sent securely over the FSU network. The information is accessible by the CCI IT and HelpDesk staff. Employees may visit the HelpDesk for a walk-through and visual inspection of the data collected from their device(s), and may also view a list of the IP addresses configured for reporting.

An aggregate and anonymized compilation of this information is provided to both the College and University as part of the contracting and inventory processes.

Is my computer protected against viruses/malware/ransomware, etc.?
All FSU-owned Windows computers are configured with Windows Defender/Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection to assist with anti-virus and anti-malware. This application is managed by ITS who dispatches daily security definitions and real-time protection from vulnerabilities. However, sometimes attackers can exploit computers by sending suspicious links in e-mails. Be sure to read the Internet Security Privacy Office’s notice on phishing to familiarize yourself with signs of a phishing attempt.

Can I checkout a laptop, camera, video camera, etc.?
Students, faculty, and staff may check out materials for a one week period. Availability is subject to change. Please bring your FSUCard for identification purposes.

Items available for temporary loan include:

  • Laptops/tablets
  • Basic headphones and headphones with microphones
  • Video camera and video recording equipment
  • Audio/visual aids including laser pointer pens, a projector and screen, a portable microphone and speaker system
  • Professional and conference microphones
  • Cables and adapters (USB→Ethernet, HDMI→VGA, etc.)

Can you help with homework?
In keeping with the FSU Academic Honor Policy, the CCI HelpDesk cannot assist with coursework. We recommend checking with your teaching assistant or instructor for help with assignments.
